One of Batam’s main attractions is its proximity to nature, with sandy beaches and lush forest parks. Since you’re already going to Batam via Berjaya Waterfront in Johor Bahru, you should absolutely make Johor’s nature spots part of your adventure!

Johor is home to many natural attractions - from waterfalls in the forest to golden beaches. If your Batam trip doesn’t completely scratch that nature itch, why not spend a day or two exploring what the tiger state has to offer?

Here are 5 must-visit nature spots in Johor to add to your itinerary:

1. Gunung Ledang (Tangkak)

Gunung Ledang is famous for four reasons:
  • The titular home of the legendary Puteri Gunung Ledang
  • The site where Hang Tuah and his companions learn Silat
  • Containing a yet-undiscovered deposit of gold, and
  • Being the highest peak in Johor.
If climbing mountains is your thing, Gunung Ledang offers a challenging climb; taking about half a day to reach the summit. It will be worth it though. In good weather, the summit offers a stunning 360-degree view of the surrounding area - perfect for photos and selfies!

Hiking routes are also available, where you can also stop by a refreshing waterfall or take an extended walk through the lush forests. Gunung Ledang is home to a plethora of plants, wildlife, and birds - bring binoculars!

Plenty of casual activities are available at the foot of the mountain, including a museum and picnic and camping grounds.
While there’s no promise that you’ll find a celestial princess or gold on your visit, you’re guaranteed to find a treasure trove of wildlife and flora!

2. Kota Tinggi Firefly Park & Firefly Valley Leisure Park (Kota Tinggi)

Perfect for kids and romantics!

The Kota Tinggi stretch of the Johor river is a natural habitat for fireflies. At night, thousands of fireflies light up the river banks and surrounding mangrove trees, transforming the area into a starry spectacle you’ll need to see in person!

Both parks offer a 45-minute to 1 hour  riverboat cruise that puts you in the centre of the magic.

The best times are between 7:30pm - 8:30pm when the fireflies are most active, and you might be lucky enough to spot other wildlife wanting to share the spotlight!

Each cruise is also accompanied by a guide who can answer curious questions about these sparkly insects and wildlife conservation. These cruises are always in high demand, so be sure to book your tickets in advance

3. Pantai Air Papan (Mersing)

If you didn’t get enough beach in Batam, this one’s for you!

Pantai Air Papan is a beach that’s overshadowed by Desaru Beach and Tioman Island. In fact,  Tioman is right across the ocean from Pantai Air Papan.

However, this also means that Pantai Air Papan is less crowded, cleaner, and less commercial. With a view of the clear blue ocean and islands in the distance, it’s perfect for day tripping and camping.

Here’s a fun bit of trivia. According to locals, the beach gets its name from the nearby Kampung Air Papan, or Water Plank Village. Years ago, villagers would direct the flow of fresh, cool water from a mountain spring into containers using planks from a nearby factory, and the name stuck.

Pantai Air Papan is usually tranquil, but can be busier on school holidays. You might want to avoid these periods if you’re looking for some peace and quiet.

4. Gunung Lambak (Kluang, Johor)

Standing at 510 metres above sea level, Gunung Lambak is a prominent backdrop in Kluang’s skyline. Perfect for picnics at the foothill and photos at the peak, there’s something for everyone.

The mountain offers 3 routes, with the hardest one involving a steep climb that may push the most experienced hikers. In more challenging spots, ropes and railings are available to help you with your foothold.

Otherwise, you can just take a walk along the concrete path which still offers fresh air and greenery. There’s a beautiful hanging bridge, and even a fountain that greets you once you make it to the end!

Also available in the area is a camping ground, an organic restaurant, and a waterpark. But wait, there’s more - The mountain actually has two peaks, which necessitates a second visit!

5. Pulau Kukup (Kukup)

Location: 55km from Johor Bahru | Map link

Pulau Kukup is just under an hours’ drive from Berjaya Waterfront and a short boat ride away. With no lodging or human residents, it’s a mangrove and wildlife paradise.

Untouched by development, the island is home to unique wildlife including:
  • The flat-headed cat
  • The bearded pig
  • The Asian palm civet
  • The dog-faced water snake

The island is also a popular bird-watching site to spot migratory birds and rare bird species such as the milky stork and Chinese egret.

You can explore the island on foot, crossing a suspension bridge that offers a breathtaking view of the area, or on a boat through the 6 rivers in the island.

And if you’re hungry, the mainland is famous for its seaside restaurants that serve fresh and delicious seafood. It’s the perfect day trip!
