Transportation in Batam: E-Hailing vs Car Rental

Wondering how to get around Batam? This guide compares the best transport options in Batam for Malaysian tourists, from e-hailing to car rentals… and even the public bus!

Whether you’re travelling solo or in a group, sticking to the city or venturing off the familiar path - we’re here to help you find the right ride for your stay.

1. E-hailing is best for the Batam city centre

Most suitable if you:
  • Are in smaller groups or families (4 people or less)
  • Have lodgings and activities in the city or major townships
  • Have a local SIM card or data roaming
  • Are not planning to travel far
E-hailing apps like Grab, Gojek, and Maxim are widely used in Batam. But as a Malaysian, you are most likely choosing between Grab and Gojek.

This is because you don’t have to download a separate app if you’re already using Grab. Just open your existing Grab app, and you’re good to go!

If you’re travelling alone, then Gojek is the cheapest way to get around. Provided, of course, that you’re comfortable riding pillion on a motorbike. The app also offers GoCar if you’d rather stick to four wheels.

Maxim is most similar to Grab, and is another reliable choice. You may want to compare their prices during peak hours. Just like Grab, Maxim’s app can be used in Indonesia if you already have it installed on your phone.

2. Car rental in Batam is best for large groups and further trips

Most suitable if you:
  • Are in a larger group (up to 8 people)
  • Stay in a resort or hotel further out of the city
  • Are visiting multiple locations
  • Prioritize convenience and flexibility
Renting a car in Batam is surprisingly affordable - especially if you split the cost among your group. E-hailing costs might stack up if you’re visiting multiple locations or those further out like Barelang Bridge and Puncak Beliung.

Car rental companies in Batam offer reasonable daily rates with a selection of vehicles ranging from sedans to MPVs. However, you need to have an international driving permit, which can be acquired from the Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ).

If you don’t feel like driving in a foreign country, get a personal driver with your rental car! Cost-wise, you’ll have to pay the driver’s daily rate, fuel, and their meals. A small tip at the end of each day is also highly encouraged.

If you’re staying in resorts outside the city like Nongsa, it may be tough getting a Grab or Gojek. Having a personal driver means you won’t be tied down by the resort van’s schedule. All you need to do is inform the driver when you’ll be ready, and they’ll be there!

Don’t know where to go? Your drivers can double up as an unofficial tour guide. They can suggest places to eat or visit, tell you more about Batam, or help you translate - don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation!

3. The Trans Batam bus is best for adventurous explorers

Most suitable if you:

  • Don’t have a tight itinerary
  • Are travelling on a budget
  • Want to explore Batam like a local
  • Are looking for unique experiences

If you’re the where-the-wind-takes-you kind of traveller, you may enjoy hopping on a public bus and seeing where the route takes you.

Trans Batam is Batam’s public bus network that spans most of the main island. This means you can travel around the island relatively cheaply, and visit less-touristy local communities. However, you’ll have to keep an eye on local bus schedules and unexpected delays.

Good news if you’re an Android user though! Trans Batam has an app that provides route information and ETA updates.
